About Emphysema
Emphysema is a breathing condition that develops slowly and is often caused by cigarette smoking. Many patients with emphysema will have symptoms of chronic bronchitis.
Emphysema occurs when the tiny air sacs in the lungs are damaged or destroyed. The air sacs (alveoli) are where oxygen enters the bloodstream. When the air sacs are damaged, shortness of breath occurs.
If you have emphysema, you may experience symptoms that include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing out, and chronic cough. Emphysema also makes it harder to exercise due to shortness of breath.
As emphysema advances, the air sacs continue to get damaged, and lung function worsens. There are treatments that can offer relief of your symptoms.
